Project Case Studies

Within the King Group, King Transport Equipment Limited designs and builds bespoke transport solutions for high integrity and high value loads. King has a proven history of developing 'moving solutions'. This specialist business is certified to 'confidential' status with the UK Office of National Security. It's project management and prototype build ability is used by many blue chip organisations. Download our Company brochure for more information.

Mobile Scanners for HM Customs

King partnered with US giant SAIC to produce vehicle mounted scanning equipment that could be used on national borders to search for drugs, illegal immigrants, weapons and other contraband. Taking a proven vehicle - a low entry Mercedes Econic municipal chassis, King Highway Products then set about putting a team of partners together to provide specialist expertise which resulted in winning a contract with UK Customs and Excise.

King installed a specially designed aerial platform which was fitted with a scanning device and on board receiver. Inside the tailor made bodywork a workcabin was fitted out with computer based interrogation equipment such that operators could 'see' inside the selected vehicle when it drove under the deployed boom. The solution meant that vehicles crossing borders could be kept moving and dealt with in a speedy fashion.

Subsequently these products have been sold to governments in many other countries.

Aircraft Engine Transporters

At first glance an engine transporter may look like any other lowloader but when one considers the value of the load and the need for careful loading and unloading and secure carriage on the road, it is important that the choice of supplier understands the needs of the customer completely. We worked closely with Rolls Royce to produce a solution which has been adopted around the world by national airlines.

Wing Carriers for Airbus Industrie

The care of an aircraft wing in transit is critical. Not just any trailer design will do. Working within close tolerances laid down by the jig and tool team at Airbus, King engineers were able to provide an economical solution for the carriage of wings which could then be used to load into another aircraft for onward shipment to the assembly line.

Mobile Bogies for Oilfield Services - the bigger the better

How do you move a mobile drilling derrick across difficult terrain. Talk to King. Our engineers were tasked with building heavy duty bogies strong enough to transport a 100 tonne mobile derrick across uneven ground and be suitable as a base for drilling operations.

Power Generation on the move

Working with generator companies to provide mobile solutions is a tradition with King. Whether the application is for a solution which can be housed in one trailer or a family of nested units King is happy to advise on mobile bases, jacking stations and we are also able to advise on the reactive forces that need to be dealt with when these power centres are in operation. Very often trailer companies can overlook the demands of the structure once it is in position and operating.

Mobile jigs and fixtures

When Rolls Royce required a test rig in which to 'run up' and test their aero engine they turned to King. We built a rig in which to mount the engine which could be coupled to a 'neck and bogie' to move the rig or rig and engine between locations and ensured it was fitted with a weatherproof body as well.

How do you get a 45 metre tram from York to Strasbourg

Getting it there was as interesting as building the trailer. Loading and offloading onto the ferry at times to suit the tides was a challenge. The trailer was fitted with modular decks sections fitted with rail track and the rear bogie joint designed to allow the rear deck section to be inverted such that the trailer could be used as a standard 5 axle low loader for carrying 100 tonne rail locomotives.

Transporting jet fuselages couldn't be easier

Working with MoD teams and meeting their exacting engineering demands. Because we were able to set down the key parameters at the beginning we got to understand that this would not be just any trailer. The result - a unit that can be used to transport fuselages and wing sets and which can be supplied to other air force clients worldwide.

Bespoke Trailers for Motor Racing

Many of the top F1 teams have transporters based on King chassis.

The highest standard

Perched on top of the ski run this King trailer demonstrates how we are able to build what the customer wants. King designed the trailer, it's jacking system and rotating mast. There are a number of King screen and broadcast trailers around the world - another slant on specialist mobile engineering. If you have an idea for something special that needs to be mobile then send us your details and challenge us to come up with a solution.

Rail Conversions for Construction Plant

King was chosen to partner Caterpillar to engineer, develop, build and get certified, a rail conversion for it's 'rubber duck' excavator, which it could then offer for sale through it's dealer network. King was responsible for all discussions with the UK rail authorities.
