When The Worshipful Company of Carmen held their annual cartmarking ceremony at the Guildhall in the City of London on July 15th, approx. 40 vehicles new and old from handcarts to the latest vehicle technology were presented to the Lord Mayor and the Master Carman for marking - branding with a hot iron to you and I - on a wooden plaque mounted to the side of the vehicle.
This is a tradition that goes back to 1517 when 'Carmen' who plied their trade in the City had to have their carts marked - an earlier form of licensing - which perhaps has been replicated today with the congestion charge!!
The Impact Protection Vehicle on contract to Chevron Traffic Management from Safety Vehicle Hire and Lease Limited and fitted with a King Safestop 90 crash cushion was presented for marking to the Master Carman. More infomation on the ceremony and its traditions can be found at www.thecarmen.co.uk
